In south-central New Mexico, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of White Sands National Monument and just west of Carrizozo, you will find a very large lava flow across the New Mexico desert landscape and highway. The lava is the Carrizozo Malpais, a massive volcanic lava flow left over from volcanic activity that occurred several thousand years ago. The Valley of Fire is so large you can see it from space.
