Historical Harvey Houses in Las Vegas, New Mexico

On your next road trip through New Mexico you need to stop and visit the many Harvey House structures that still exist in New Mexico. We are going to take you on a tour of three renovated Harvey Houses in Las Vegas, New Mexico. We will do a tour of The Castañeda Hotel, a Harvey Girl Dorm, and Montezuma Castle. All in the Las Vegas, New Mexico area and a great stop on Highway 25 or a detour on Highway 40.

The Harvey Houses were owned by the Fred Harvey Company. They were a chain of restaurants, hotels, and other hospitality businesses alongside Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in the western United States. Founded in 1876, Fred Harvey catered to train passenger along the Santa Fe trainline. During WWII, Harvey Houses served troop trains across the USA. And their facilities launched a job market for thousands of young women around the United States called Harvey Girls. Judy Garland even starred in the movie “The Harvey Girls.” Which won an Academy Award for it’s hit song, “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe”, written by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer.

Harvey Houses and hotels served traveler until the early 1960’s. So, what happen to all those buildings? Some were abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Some demolished. Some still stand and are being redone. Some still are wonderful hotels and businesses. Some are iconic buildings at the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Harvey Houses are must- sees when visiting The Land of Enchantment, they call New Mexico.
