One of our favorite places to visit is Deadwood, South Dakota. Between the history and many things to do, we always enjoy our stay. One of our favorite activities is to strolling the historical Main street during the summer months.
Deadwood is over 4500 feet in altitude. Making the summer months cool and mild. The temperature averages between 73.9°F (23.3°C) and 80.1°F (26.7°C) the entire summer.
1876 Deadwood was recently made famous with the HBO series and movie, Deadwood. It inspired a whole new flock of individuals to fall in love with this Wild West town they had never been too.
In 1876, the mining town of Deadwood was born when prospectors came across a gulch that was full of dead trees and a creek full of gold. Hence the name Deadwood.
The town grew over night. The gold rush brought famous Wild West characters such as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, Wyatt Earp, Al Swearingen, Colorado Charlie Utter, Sol Starr, and more. All portrayed in the Deadwood series.

Many of these character lay to rest in the hilltop cemetery Mt. Moriah. Which has a beautiful view of Deadwood below. When visiting the cemetery, you will come across Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane’s gravesites. Bill and Jane are buried next to each other. And Seth is on a hilltop above the cemetery. See our tour video on Mt. Moriah: Click Here to watch video.
The town still has that Wild West flare. During the summer months they perform reenactments all over the town. The cemetery is a tourist attraction. And the hotels and bars offer low stake gambling. Such as blackjack, slots, and more.

During the first weeks of August, the town comes alive with motorcycles arriving to partake in the yearly Sturgis motorcycle rally. Which is the next town over.
We highly recommend you plan a trip to Deadwood and the Black Hills. Between Mt Rushmore, The Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Devil’s Tower and more, you will not be disappointed. See our interactive map below.
