In 2025, Jordan Brand will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Air Jordan 5. The model was originally released in 1990 in four colorways. We have seen new pairs arrive at retailers throughout the years, but nothing like the OG. For Spring 2025, the brand will give the “Black Metallic” Air Jordan 5 a twist, adding the shoes to its Reimagined lineup.
Releases Through the Years
The Air Jordan 5 “Black Metallic” has been released five times, with the sixth arriving in 2025. First arriving to the scene in 1990, the first retro launched in 2000, and both pairs had the iconic Nike Air branding. In 2007 and 2011, the sneakers returned. However, both renditions came with a Jumpman on the heels and the number 23 stitched on the lateral side, reminiscent of Michael Jordan’s PE. The last retro release occurred in 2016, and the brand returned to the Nike Air Branding.
For 2025, the shoes were originally expected to be part of the Remastered Series. However, that has changed and will now be reimagined. This Air Jordan 5 won’t have new materials or aged details. Retaining the original Black, White, Metallic Silver, and Fire Red color scheme. It will be constructed with Black nubuck across the upper, while White fills in the Nike Air on the heel tabs. In addition, Metallic Silver adorns the 3M reflective tongues and the shark teeth, with speckled black details on the midsole. Minimal Red fills in the Jumpman on the tongues, and “Air Jordan” is written upside down inside the tongues. The “Reimagined” part will include 3M pipping throughout and White laces, just like MJ’s PE. Other details include a visible Air unit in the heels, a Black midsole, translucent mesh netting on the panels and tongues, and a translucent rubber outsole.
Remembering MJ’s “Black Metallic” Air Jordan 5 PE
Michael Jordan wore a special “Black Metallic” Air Jordan 5 PE (Player Exclusive) in 1990 that was never released to the public. This rendition came in the signature color blocking. However, 23 was stitched on the lateral heel, slightly larger than the retros. Furthermore, the shoes had a thinner tongue, brought back via the A Ma Maniere collaboration. The finishing touch was the addition of White laces.
